Inspired by zombies, slapstick, stock jokes, and the vulnerability that a stand-up comic experiences, Pfau and Gill crafted this scenario with the help of comic/sound artist Drennon Davis. The video places emphasis on the blurry / tense threshold between the performer and the audience, and between the performer's body and the bodies of those who have come before. One point of inspiration comes from the fork and potato dance in Charlie Chaplin's film "The Kid" which in this video is redone using skeleton legs. The drawings stem from collaged elements of 16th Century medical diagrams, film stills, videogame imagery, cartoons, Futurist sculpture, and 3D computer animation models. Black lines are often used in outlining figures in cartoons, defining territorial boundaries on maps, inscribing bodily contours in medical diagrams, and forming iconographic or glyph based languages. These works seek to question the authority of the diagrammatic, medical, black-line style by the contradictory, inside-out people they portray. At the 2014 Toronto Zombie Walk, the Zombie Interviewers encountered a wide range of talkative zombies. While a few let their appearance do the talking for them, most had answers, declarations, hopes and jokes on the tips of their tongues. The zombies talked about many things, including: - adapting to an ever-changing sense of self. - questioning the rules we all choose to (un)live by. - striving for recognition and rights. - crossing blurry boundaries between parallel universes. - attracting swarms of un-costumed selfie photographers with their newfound celebrity status. - being misunderstood, stereotyped and discriminated against by survival-supremacists. - coming out of the closet/graveyard. - making dietary choices and managing bodily urges. - organizing to oppose government imposed systems of violence and oppression. - falling in love. When a zombie sees their own image reflected back to them, do they see “zombie?” ZombieInterViews was filmed in Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, a plaza containing a large reflecting pool. While this expansive liquid mirror provides a space for self-recognition, the site as a whole is a significant nexus point between individuals and their community. Nestled between two City Halls, old and new, the square has hosted myriad civic events including political demonstrations, concerts, farmers’ markets, and zombie gatherings. In 2008, MG Gallery in Oakland hosted a Sentence Drawing Sentence exhibition along with a series of drawing events. Sentence Collage Sentence took place at C.C.A. with support from Elisheva Biernoff and Matt Gordon. A group of people sits in a circular formation, usually around a table. To start, a sheet of paper is distributed to each person. They begin by writing a sentence at the top of their sheet. The paper is then passed along to the next person at the table. It is their job to make an illustrative or interpretative drawing based on the sentence. Next, the initial sentence gets folded over and hidden leaving only the drawing. This gets passed to the next person. Their job is to write a sentence based on this drawing. The drawing is then folded over and the process repeats as the paper goes from person to person. Eventually, there is no more room to write or draw and the paper is unfolded. The result is a page with alternating sentences and drawings. The project, Demos: Wapato Correctional Facility is comprised of a video, publication, a print edition (printed in collaboration with Pacific Northwest College of Arts' Watershed Press), and a participatory event called Wapato Roundtable. This work was made with the tremendous support of Portland’s c3:Initiative. Demos (pronounced “day-moss”) conjures early Athenian concepts of both “village” and “People” (Δῆμος). Equally, demos can be read to connote more modern concepts of the “demo,” or mix-tape, as well as the shorthand vernacular for demolition. As a collaborative group intent on testing and enacting forms of democracy, demos refers to local participatory engagement, keeping methods experimental and provisional, while harnessing the power of generative de(con)struction. Coyotes, ERNEST’s unlikely interlocutors at Wapato, burrow beneath the fenced perimeter of the jail to come and go as they please. Coyote, and an unrelenting sense of frustration, leads Demos: Wapato Correctional Facility in a transformation of the specifics of Wapato Jail into a platform for challenging conversation and collaboration. There’s “zombie formalism,” “zombie technology,” “zombie debt,” “zombie poetry.” If something exists, there’s a living dead version of it. Why is this? And to what effect? For years George Pfau has been exploring these questions and our culture’s fixation on zombie through painting, drawing, video and lectures. Starting with a collaborative video, also titled Zombie Variations, he began to work with poet Tom Comitta on a number of linguistic and poetic inquiries into zombie and the grotesque. These multimedia collaborations offer a glimpse into a fusion of their practices in which language, pop culture and the grotesque merge into many variations on a theme. The Zombie Variations project began with a 15-minute video of Tom reading their co-written tongue twisters and poems. Subsequently, they developed the large-scale vinyl installation “Eight-Fields Surrounding a Village (Or a History of the Hashtag)” depicting a sequential narrative that maps zombie film tropes to the evolution of the hashtag. A number of rebus paintings by Pfau and Comitta offer deconstructed, alternative visual narratives to popular zombie movies. Additionally, they created BlabberLab, which is a dynamic tool for creating grotesque coded messages or visual poems. The variations abound. The pair produced two books: Zombie Variations and Zombie Variations Symposium. The former displays a full catalog of collaborative drawings, text art, sound poetry scores, notes, and other images by Pfau and Comitta. Zombie Variations Symposium presents the work of six artists, poets, lawyers and scholars: Ashley Brim, Angela Hennessy, Rajkamal Kahlon, Sarah Juliet Lauro, Jonah Mixon-Webster and Joshua Warren. Their approaches to manifesto, collage, drawing and storytelling offer additional and highly nuanced approaches to “zombie” and pop culture. Housed in the Super Pop-Up Shop under the supervision of curators Glen Helfand and Rebeca Bollinger, this project mined mall-goers for their zombie knowledge. Upon entering the Pop-Up Shop, people of all ages were invited to make a drawing of a zombie and to write where they saw him/her/them/it in or around the mall. Over 150 drawings were produced, citing zombie appearances in many different locales.
